I was born in New York City and lived in Manhattan until I left for Haverford College on the main line of Philadelphia in 1984. After college, since I was an art history major (which I loved!), I finished my medical school requirements at the University of Pennsylvania. I then went to Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, one of the best medical schools in the country. From the start, we were taught the importance of taking care of the whole patient. There was a strong emphasis on the psychosocial issues in medicine and the importance of individualizing patient care. We were taught to listen.
After medical school I stayed in Cleveland for my internship and residency. Concurrently, my soon to be husband, had a PhD and MD to complete, which would take him an additional 4 years. We then moved to Seattle, Washington where I got my first job at age 32! We loved Seattle, although we grew a bit tired of all the gray and rain. Seven years later, when we had an opportunity to move to Pasadena, California we were very excited. Leaving friends, family and my wonderful patients there wasn't easy, but California welcomed us with open arms (although now that we're in Houston, we see how friendly and accepting people can really be!). It was after 5 years on California that we moved to Houston.
In December of 2005, my family moved from California to Houston, TX. My husband, who is a physician and research scientist, was recruited by MD Anderson, to run their pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant program. We felt this opportunity was special enough to warrant my leaving my fabulous private practice in dry and sunny southern California. Our children, a daughter who is now 14 and attends Memorial High School, and our son who is now 12 and attends Memorial Middle School, have done a beautiful job with a tough transition.
